How to use multiple Telegram accounts on PC

Updated · TGDesk

Short answer: open Telegram Desktop, click the menu (☰), then Add Account, and sign in with a second phone number. That covers up to three accounts in one app. If you need more than that, or you want each account fully separate, start extra copies of Telegram Desktop with their own data folder (the -workdir option), or use a multi-account manager that shows every account's chats in one window.

Below are all three methods with exact steps, what each one is good for, and where each one stops working well.

Before you start: what counts as an account

On Telegram, an account is a phone number. Two accounts cannot share a number, and one number cannot hold two accounts. So before adding anything, make sure you have a separate number for each account and that you can receive the login code, either by SMS or in a Telegram app where that account is already signed in. Telegram Desktop also lets you log in by scanning a QR code from a phone that is already signed in, which is often the fastest way.

It also helps to turn on two-step verification (a cloud password) for every account first. When you sign in on a new computer, the password stops anyone who intercepts a code from taking over the account.

Method 1: the built-in account switcher (up to 3 accounts)

This is the official way and the right choice for most people with a personal and a work account.

  1. Open Telegram Desktop and sign in with your first account.
  2. Click the menu button (three lines, top left).
  3. Click the small arrow next to your name, then Add Account.
  4. Sign in with the second number by QR code or phone number.
  5. Switch between accounts from the same menu. You can also give each account its own notification settings.

Limits: official Telegram apps hold three accounts each. Telegram Premium raises that; Telegram's 2022 Premium announcement described it as adding a fourth account, and recent Telegram Desktop versions count an extra slot for each signed-in Premium account. We cover the details in Telegram multiple accounts limit.

Trade-offs: you see one account at a time. Unread badges from the other accounts appear in the menu, but you still click in and out to answer. All accounts in one copy of the app share that copy's proxy and settings.

Method 2: separate Telegram Desktop copies with -workdir

Telegram Desktop stores everything for one installation (login keys, cache, settings) in a data folder, usually containing a folder called tdata. If you start the app with a different data folder, it behaves like a fresh install with its own three account slots and its own settings.

On Windows

  1. Create a folder for the second profile, for example C:\TG\work.
  2. Right-click your Telegram shortcut, choose Copy, then Paste to make a second shortcut.
  3. Open the new shortcut's Properties and add the option at the end of Target: "C:\...\Telegram.exe" -workdir "C:\TG\work".
  4. Start it and sign in. Repeat with another folder for each extra profile.

The portable version of Telegram Desktop does the same thing more simply: unzip it into a separate folder per profile and it keeps its data next to the program.

On macOS and Linux

On Linux you can run the binary with -workdir /path/to/profile from a terminal or a .desktop launcher. On macOS, Telegram offers two official apps, Telegram for macOS and Telegram Desktop, and each keeps its own data, so installing both gives you two independent profiles without any command-line options.

Good for: keeping clients or projects completely apart, giving each copy different proxy settings, or going past the per-app slot limit.

Trade-offs: one window per profile. With four or five windows open you spend a lot of time hunting for the one that just pinged. Each copy also keeps its own cache, so disk use and memory grow with every copy, and you have to update each portable copy.

Method 3: a multi-account manager with one inbox

If your job is answering customers or community members from several accounts, the real problem is not logging in; it is noticing which account has a message that needs an answer. A multi-account manager runs each account as its own session and brings all chats into one list.

Things worth checking in any such tool:

This is the gap we are building TGDesk for. It is a local-first desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux: it migrates desktop logins you already use into an encrypted vault on your machine (opening the original tdata read-only), runs the accounts side by side, and shows every chat in one unified inbox with unread and needs-reply filters and search across all accounts. It has no bulk-messaging tools and waits out Telegram's flood limits instead of trying to bypass them. TGDesk is a paid product and is coming soon; there is no public download yet. It is independent and not affiliated with Telegram.

A note on safety

Telegram allows multiple accounts; it does not allow using them to spam people. Accounts that send unsolicited messages to strangers get reported and limited regardless of which app or method they use. Keep each account for a real purpose, reply to people who contact you, and you will rarely have trouble. For more, read how to manage many Telegram accounts safely.

FAQ

Can I use two Telegram accounts on one computer?

Yes. Telegram Desktop has a built-in Add Account option, so two or three accounts in one app need no extra software. Each account needs its own phone number.

Do I need a second phone number for a second account?

Yes. Telegram treats each phone number as one account, so every account you add needs a different number that can receive the login code, or an existing device where that account is already signed in for QR login.

Is running several Telegram Desktop copies allowed?

Running the official app with separate data folders is a normal desktop feature. What matters is how you use the accounts: spam, unsolicited bulk messages and fake accounts break Telegram's terms no matter which method you use.

Will messages from all accounts show in one list?

Not in Telegram Desktop. It shows one account at a time and lets you switch. A unified inbox across accounts needs a separate multi-account tool.
